Chinese Crested
One Breed two Variety’s
Powderpuff & Hairless both
The Chinese Crested is a mutation of two different breeds that didn’t take too well (Mutants)
The first two Cresteds were seen on American Land in 1885.Thanks to Deborah Woods, of Home Stead Florida who preserved the breed in 1967 & since then the Chinese Crested & Powderpuff increased dramatically all over the United States and several other countries. Although rarely seen in China today as they were very tasty & once known as the Chinese edible dog. Though a few are seen in Hong Kong and other countries around the South China Sea and world today.
It is difficult to pinpoint the exact history of the Chinese Crested but it has been said that they were selectively bred by the famous Han family and Mandarins.
Indeed this breed may have made its home in China for hundreds of years. In the 14th century the Crested made it’s way to foreign lands with the precious Chinese Tea.
Males measure 10-13 inches while females measure 9-12 inches both weighs from 7 to12 pounds max, They are very healthy dogs with almost to no health problems as known, they are non allergy, do not shed, have virtually no odor, and are rarely bothered by fleas. Though delicate and prone to shiver, they are surprisingly hardy and strong & can live 15-20 years with non- to minimum health problems
The Crested is a small, active, dainty, alert, gentle, courageous, intelligent little watchdog who is very clean (cat like) Cresteds have an elegance & a graceful quality that is quite captivating they are friendly & full of fun & are easily controllable and never stray too far from your side, They are quick to make friends, though some are quite shy but they do adjust readily
The Chinese Crested is unusual and fascinating they can fit into any day situations They are quite bright, for their intelligence is far and above average and have been successfully trained in Obedience as well as agility & flyball. They do not require much exercise and get all they need just running around the apartment/house or back yard & even a trailer.
These dogs become strongly attached to their owners, They especially love kids and make excellent therapy dogs for the elderly, they will never want to be on the floor either, it’s either the couch, chair, your lap, or in your bed sleeping with you. They love to Hug, Cuddle, and even kiss to death, with a happy go lucky temperament & never vicious, which is a fault to this breed, yet they will protect owner and home if and when necessary. As they make a wonderful burglar alarm & bark like LARGE watchdogs yet not a yappy dog.
The crested is very loyal, & make delightful amusing companions, Owners say that the Crested is more attached to man, than ANY haired breed known, for their capacity for love knows no bounds. Many A time the transfer of an elderly Crested 8 years old & or up to a new home has proven fatal; He died of HEARTBREAK.
Hairless Cresteds are born hairless with little or no crest, where as the PowderPuff is also found in a hairless litter at birth, even as both parents being hairless themselves, As the hairless is the dominate gene & the PowderPuff is the recessive gene in THIS given breed. The hairless Crested only always have the typical missing premolars, known as tusks in any hairless breed, there may be other absent teeth, and crocked ones also, Except for the PowderPuffs, their teeth are as normal as any other haired breed. The Chinese Crested also has Hare Feet as well as long toes that can curl around objects and even hug you.
The CREST on the hairless reaches its full beauty & stops growing when the dog is about 2 years old. The Chinese Crested also have a 1 in 4 chances of having a female in any given litter usually just 2 females to the lot, including puffs, let alone that hairless every breeder wants. Most hairless including show quality have some sort of body hair, the more body hair the more furnishings, less or no body hair means no socks and not much crest or furnishings. Yet a Powderpuff to Powderpuff breeding will only produce Powderpuffs and nothing but
The Chinese Crested thrives in hot or cold climates, naked as they are they love playing in the snow as they have a built-in heating system which feels warm to the touch with a normal temperature of about 104F (Normal temperature of other breeds is about 101.5F), which earned the breeds nickname "Walking hot-water bottle" which Indians believed hairless dogs had medicinal properties to relieve aches and pains. Indians used these dogs to cure pain by placing them on different parts of their body & Claims have been made for their ability to cure arthritis.
Use a baby non-allergenic Sunscreen lotion on their skin to prevent burning
"more so the pink parts." Especially on the spotted’s, as they love the sun & to sunbathe, get real sunburns and even peel the same as us, It does not however, cause them pain or discomfort as it does in humans. Even in zero degrees weather they do not require special clothing for SHORT PERIODS while outdoors.
You should offer especially on the hairless a cotton (NOT WOOL, WOOL WILL KILL THEM.) a coat or sweater from a Pet Shop, as the wool fibers & too much lint will cause eruptions all over their body and cause DEATH. Most are also allergic to BEEF but not all, and anything with LANOLIN in it is very bad for them also
